Fortaleza, Brazil

We arrived in Fortaleza ahead of
schedule, thanks to good winds and a
good current.  We made a 200 mile run
the day before and had to slow down, so
we would arrive during the daylight.

Sailing in towards Fortaleza, we saw a
large modern city dotted with
skyscrapers and many modern facilities.
We also discovered a "third worldliness"
about it just outside the secure gates of
the hotel complex.  That's one reason we
have so few pictures of the area, since
we were warned by other yachties not to
wander outside the marina area with our
camera.

It was a great facility with swimming pool,
restaurants, and an Internet cafe!
These small houses illustrate the "have-nots" in Fortaleza.
We did make two trips into downtown,
with the help of another yachtie we
met.  His name was John and he was
sailing on a mono hull called Stingo.
We went with "Stingo John" as we
called him to the market on the bus.
Quite an experience in label reading.
The only two things we recognized that
were in English were Coke and
Pringles!

Stingo John also showed us the bar
scene on Saturday night, first stopping
off at his favorite restaurant.  The food
was great and so was the people
watching.
