St. Croix, Virgin Islands

Feeling the need to move a little faster to
make it to the States by the Boat Show, we
chose to leave the Leeward Islands until
our next trip. Besides, John has been to
both Guadeloupe and Antigua on a dive
trip several years ago. So we now set our
sites for St. Croix, some 300 miles away
and our first solo multi overnighter!
We had good winds and managed the
round the clock watches pretty well, each
doing 3 hours at a time. We left Martinique
at Odarkthirty on Dec.18 and pulled into
Christiansted Harbor, St. Croix on Dec.
20th. While at the fuel dock, we chatted
with a perky fellow who was working on his
mast-less boat. He offered us the use of
his mooring ball and we eagerly accepted
his offer. We moored securely, (John
dives mooring balls also) next to a mono
hull named Cayenne III. Aboard were
Tony and Ellen, very experienced sailors,
who helped us plot our path for the next
part of our journey. I just marvel at these
people who have sailed to so many places
and can rattle off the details of sailing
there with such ease.
We enjoyed St. Croix and spent three days
there. The Harbor area is surrounded with
dive shops, bars and boutiques. We hiked
to the Buccaneer Golf Course, a resort
course nearby and had lunch. Beautiful
course, but we didn’t have the urge to play
it without our clubs.
In St. Croix, we got our first taste of entering and anchoring in shallow water,
the first of many such adventures.
Houses and shops lined the harbor at Christensted.

longingly at one of the
greens at the
Buccaneer Golf
Course, wishing he
had his clubs.
He decides to skip the
golf and have lunch
and a drink with a little
umbrella. (left)
Puerto Rico
We docked at Puerto del Rey Marina in Puerto Rico. What a beautiful area! It is definitely on our list for a longer visit.
With somewhat of a plan, we get
underway again stopping overnight
in Puerto del Rey Marina in Puerto
Rico.
We checked in and out of Customs
over the phone. That was quite a
shock, but since it was Christmas
weekend, they must have been in the
holiday mood.
